Hortense was born in Paris, France on 10 April 1783, the daughter of Alexandre, Vicomte de Beauharnais and of his wife Josephine Tascher de la Pagerie. Her parents separated shortly after her birth. In 1794, her father was executed during the Reign of Terror and her mother was imprisoned in The Carmes. She was later released on 6 August, due to the intervention of her best friend Thérèse Tallien. Two years later her mother married Napoleon Bonaparte. Hortense was educated at the school of Madame Jeanne Campan at St. Germaine along with Napoleon's youngest sister Caroline Bonaparte Murat. She was tall, slender with blonde hair, large blue eyes, a heart-shaped face and fine features. She had an elder brother, Eugéne de Beauharnais. Hortense was an accomplished amateur musical composer and supplied the army of her stepfather Napoleon with rousing marches.

Marriage
In 1802 at Napoleon's request, Hortense married his brother Louis Bonaparte. The couple had three sons:

In 1806 Napoleon appointed his brother Louis, King of Holland. Hortense accompanied her husband to The Hague, in spite of the fact that their marriage was an unhappy one. In 1810 Louis abdicated as King of Holland and settled in Germany; Hortense, on the other hand, returned with her sons to France.

Illegitimate son
Hortense was now free to respond to the romantic overtures of the man whom she had long admired, Colonel Charles Joseph, Comte de Flahaut, a sophisticated, handsome man rumoured to be the illegitimate son of Talleyrand.[1] They soon became lovers. In 1811, at an unspecified inn in Switzerland, close to Lake Geneva, Hortense secretly gave birth to a son by her lover,
Charles Auguste Louis Joseph ( 21 October 1811 - 10 March 1865), later made duc de Morny by his half-brother, Napoleon III.
Only her brother Eugéne, Adélaide Filleul de Sousa, de Flahaut's mother, and her closest companions were aware of her pregnancy and the subsequent birth. She had used poor health to explain her prolonged visit to Switzerland, the journey having been arranged by Adélaide. Hortense cleverly disguised her pregnancy (she was by then, in her sixth month), during the baptism of Napoleon's son, Napoleon II when she was chosen to be one of the child's godmothers, an honour she shared with Madame Mère, mother of the Emperor.

Arenenberg
At the restoration of the Bourbons in 1814, Hortense received the protection of Alexander I, Tsar of Russia; at his instigation she was created duchess of Saint-Leu by King Louis XVIII. During the Hundred Days, however, Hortense supported her stepfather and brother-in-law Napoleon. This led to her banishment from France after his final defeat. She traveled in Germany and Italy before purchasing the Château of Arenenberg in the Swiss canton of Thurgau in 1817. She lived there until her death on 5 October 1837, at age 54. She is buried next to her mother Josephine in the St Pierre-St Paul church in Rueil-Malmaison.

A portrait of Hortense hangs at Ash Lawn-Highland, the Virginia plantation home of James Monroe, 5th President of the United States. It was one of three portraits given by Hortense to Monroe's daughter Eliza, who went to school with Hortense in France. (The other two portraits are of Hortense's brother Eugene de Beauharnais and of Madame Campan, the headmistress of the school attended by Hortense and Eliza). Eliza's daughter, Hortensia Monroe Hay was named in honour of Hortense.

De componiste

Hortense is ook als componiste bekend. Ze componeerde op haar pianoforte ongeveer 140 'Romances', voor sopraan en piano of harp. Van al haar composities was Partant pour la Syrie het bekendste: de Bonapartisten beschouwden het als hun lijflied. Toen Hortenses zoon na haar dood tot keizer Napoleon III werd verheven, maakte hij deze romance tot Hymne Impériale. In haar Memoires verteld de koningin over het componeren van dit stuk. Schubert maakte in 1822 vierhandige variaties voor pianoforte op haar romances, opgedragen aan Beethoven. In haar jeugd op Martinique leerde Hortense dansen en zingen van de negerslaven op de plantage van haar grootmoeder. Ze had veel gevoel voor ritme en amuseerde de passagiers op het zeilschip dat haar naar Frankrijk bracht met dansvoorstellingen op het dek. Later zouden kranten schrijven over haar hofballet waarin ze gekleed als Inca priesteres bezaaid met diamanten, een quadrille aanvoerde. De kunstzinnige koningin kon ook goed tekenen; zij portretteerde Charles de la Bédoyère en ontwierp de versierselen van de Orde van de Unie. Ze liet haar omvangrijke Mémoires na en een groot aantal tekeningen, gravures, schilderijen en aquarellen.

Rueil-Malmaison

Rueil-Malmaison was originally called simply Rueil. In medieval times the name Rueil was spelled either Roialum, Riogilum, Rotoialum, Ruolium, or Ruellium. This name is made of the Celtic word ialo (meaning "clearing, glade", "place of") suffixed to a radical meaning "brook, stream" (Latin rivus, Old French rû), or maybe to a radical meaning "ford" (Celtic ritu).
In 1928, the name of the commune officially became Rueil-Malmaison in reference to its most famous tourist attraction, the Château de Malmaison, home of Napoléon's first wife Joséphine de Beauharnais.
The name Malmaison comes from Medieval Latin mala mansio, meaning "ill-fated domain", "estate of ill luck". In the Early Middle Ages Malmaison was the site of a royal residence which was destroyed by the Vikings in 846.
History
Rueil is famous for the Château de Malmaison where Napoleon and his first wife Joséphine de Beauharnais lived. Upon her death in 1814, she was buried at the nearby Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church, which stands at the centre of the city.
The Rueil barracks of the Swiss Guard were constructed in 1756 under Louis XV by the architect Axel Guillaumot, and have been classifed Monument historique since 1973. The Guard was formed by Louis XIII in 1616 and massacred at the Tuileries on 10 August 1792 during the French Revolution.
During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Rueil was located on the front line.
At the end of the 19th century, renowned Impressionist painters like Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edouard Manet and Claude Monet came to paint the Seine River which crosses the town.
Rueil is (despite the title) the principal location of the novel Loin de Rueil by the French novelist Raymond Queneau, 1903 - 1976.

Hortense de Beauharnais

Hortense Eugénie Cécile (Parijs, Frankrijk, 10 april 1783 - Slot Arenenberg, Zwitserland, 5 oktober 1837), was de enige dochter en tweede kind van Alexandre de Beauharnais en Joséphine de Beauharnais.
Op 4 januari 1802 trouwde ze met Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. Ze kregen drie zoons:
Prins Napoléon Louis Charles (10 oktober 1802 - 4 mei 1807)
Prins Napoléon Louis (11 oktober 1804 - 17 maart 1831)
Prins Charles Louis Napoléon (20 april 1808 - 9 januari 1873), de latere Napoléon III.
Nadat haar moeder met Napoleon I van Frankrijk hertrouwd was, werd Hortense door Napoleon geadopteerd en kreeg ze de titel "Prinses van Frankrijk".
In 1806 werd Louis Koning van Nederland. Hortense ging met haar man mee naar Den Haag. Hun huwelijk was helemaal niet gelukkig, dus toen Louis aftrad van de Nederlandse troon in 1810 en in Duitsland ging wonen, ging Hortense met haar kinderen terug naar Frankrijk.
Tijdens de oorlog om haar stiefvader en schoonbroer Napoleon, steunde ze hem, wat uiteindelijk leidde tot haar verbanning van Frankrijk. Ze reisde door Duitsland en Italië, voordat ze in Zwitserland ging wonen, waar ze tot haar dood is gebleven.

Op dit moment beleef ik heel veel plezier aan het maken van weblogs.Ik kan niet wachten tot ik weer achter mijn PC kan gaan zitten. Ik leer heel veel over het maken van blogs en allerlei tools. Ik zoek net zo lang tot ik begrijp hoe anderen aan de prachtige effecten op hun weblog komen.
Zolang als ik me kan herinneren lees ik boeken. Als klein meisje had ik al heel snel alles gelezen wat er voor mijn leeftijd in de bibliotheek was. Mijn moeder ging met mij mee en vroeg of ik ook geen boeken voor oudere kinderen mocht lezen.Dat mocht.Ik ben gek op geschiedenis. Ik voel geschiedenis. Dit klinkt gek, is het misschien ook, maar ik heb altijd het idee gehad dat de realiteit uit lagen bestaat, dat het lijkt of iets voorbij is, maar in werkelijkheid is alles er nog.Ik vind vooral de geschiedenis van vrouwen interessant. Vrouwen hebben zo moeten opboksen tegen patriarchale ideeen. Hoe ontworstelden vrouwen zich aan dit lot?
Jane Austen kwam terug op haar ja woord aan een rijke man, die haar en haar moeder en zus had kunnen "redden" van geldzorgen. Ze kwam erop terug omdat ze voor zichzelf koos, voor haar schrijverschap.
The Bronte Sisters groeiden kort nadat Jane overleed op, de maatschappij was veranderd. Wat ik dan fascinerend vind is, wat er dan veranderd is en waarom? Waarom zijn mensen anders gaan denken? Waarom vindt Charlotte Bronte de boeken van Jane Austen onbezield? Zo'n korte tijdspanne ertussen en toch zo anders.
Hortense de Beauharnis, de kunstzinnige, gevoelige dochter van Napoleon en Josephine de Beauharnais. Ze wilde componeren, maar moest Koningin van Holland worden. De tijd waarin zij leefde, de overgang van Franse revolutie naar keizerschap is zo fascinerend.
Het duizelt me wanneer ik boeken lees, zoveel namen, zoveel gebeurtenissen.Met mijn weblogs kan ik hier orde in brengen. Kan ik zaken voor mezelf en misschien ook wel voor anderen verduidelijken.

Hortense de Beauharnais.

Tweehonderd jaar geleden, in 1806, krijgt Nederland een koningin: Hortense de Beauharnais. Ze was getrouwd met Lodewijk Napoleon, die door zijn broer, de Franse keizer Napoleon Bonaparte, tot koning van Nederland werd gekroond. Om het nog ingewikkelder te maken: de moeder van Hortense was Josephine, de vrouw van keizer Napoleon. Napoleon huwde dus zijn stiefdochter uit aan zijn broer. Hortense was niet erg gelukkig in Nederland en in haar huwelijk, maar ze kreeg wel drie kinderen. In 1810 trad Lodewijk Napoleon al weer af en ging het paar uit elkaar. Hoewel Hortense dus geen koningin meer was bleef ze zich toch La Reine Hortense noemen. Ondanks de scheiding van haar man bleef het lot van Hortense bepaald worden door haar banden met de familie Napoleon. Ook na de verbanning van haar stiefvader naar Elba (die toen weer gescheiden was van haar moeder) bleef ze hem steunen. Hierdoor kon ze na de val van het Keizerrijk niet langer in Frankrijk blijven. Na wat omzwervingen door Europa kocht ze het slot Arenenberg, waar ze in 1783 ook geboren was. Tot haar dood in 1837 bleef ze daar wonen.

Partant pour la Syrie

Geschreven door Hortense de Beauharnais. Van al haar composities werd Partant pour la Syrie het bekendste: de Bonapartisten beschouwden het als hun lijflied. Toen Hortenses zoon na haar dood tot keizer Napoleon III werd verheven bewerkten diverse componisten deze romance tot Hymne Impériale.

Partant pour la Syrie,
Le jeune et Beau Dunois,
Venait prier Marie,
De bénir ses exploits.
Faites, Reine immortelle,
Lui dit-il en partant,
Qu'aimé de la plus belle,
Je sois le plus vaillant.

Il écrit sur la pierre,

In het laatste filmpje hoor je het stuk: Partant pour la Syrie, een klassiek voorbeeld van een 'romance' in de middeleeuwse Romantische Troubadour stijl dat Hortese schreef in 1807. Hortense schreef in haar memoires 'Partant pour la Syrie is geschreven te Malmaison terwijl mijn moeder tric-trac' speelde (Mémoires, vol. 3, p. 119).
De tekst verteld over de kruisvaarder Dunois, die bid tot Maria vlak voordat hij vertrek voor een kruistocht naar Syrie. Hij bid dat zijn geliefde de mooiste en hij de darperste mag zijn. Zijn gebed wordt verhoord. Hij is de dapperste op het slagveld en bij terugkomst krijgt hij de hand van de mooie Isabelle. De bezongen man lijkt te verwijzen naar de historische figuur van Comte de Dunois, gezel van Joan of Arc, maar is volledig gefantaseerd.
Het was ten tijde van het eerste en het tweede rijk enorm populair. Louise Cochelet, Hortense's onderwijzer, schreef in haar memoires over Hortense dat Le beau Dunois 'zo veel gezongen werd, dat het gepeupel het eindeloos herhaalde in de straten, promenades, overal. Uiteindelijk werd het zo vaak gespeeld dat, ondanks de romance zeer charmant is, het begon te vervelen.' Het lied bleek lang erg populair. Over tientallen jaren werd het bewerkt en gearranged voor verschillende instrumenten door componisten als Bochsa en Dussek. Hortense's romance bereikte het hoogtepunt van populairiteit tijdens het tweede rijk toen het een nationaal volkslied werd en gespeeld werd bij zeer officiele gelegenheden. Al wordt het nog steeds gezongen in het Franse leger, het lied is nu zo goed als vergeten.
